Design Elements

Niagara basement renovation in grimsby with media feature wall using custom cabinetry

Working alongside Sprague Interiors, this basement renovation was designed to feel like a natural extension of the main floor while still offering the durability and functionality needed for everyday family life. The overall design direction combined warm textures, modern finishes, and practical storage solutions to create a space that felt both elevated and comfortable.

The recreation room became the focal point of the basement with custom built-ins, integrated storage, and a fireplace feature wall. The new bathroom featured a custom vanity, glass shower enclosure, and layered tile selections that added texture and warmth throughout the space. Additional details such as wallpaper accents, modern lighting, under-stair storage, and double sliding doors helped create a polished and highly functional lower level.

Before The basement Renovation

floor plan & functionality

The layout of this basement renovation was carefully planned to maximize usable living space while creating flexibility for the homeowners’ growing family. The finished basement includes a large recreation room, a full bathroom, a dedicated multi-purpose room, and integrated storage throughout the space.

The recreation room was designed as the central gathering area for family movie nights, entertaining, and everyday use, while custom built-ins helped keep the space organized and clutter-free. The new multi-purpose room can function as a guest bedroom, home office, or secondary lounge area depending on the family’s future needs. To improve natural light and meet Ontario Building Code requirements, a new egress window was added, along with double sliding doors that helped maintain an open and connected feel within the basement.

renovation challenges

Niagara basement renovation styled open wooden shelving

Like many basement renovations, one of the primary challenges of this project was working within the constraints of the existing structure while still creating a bright, open, and functional finished space. Existing steel beams, bulkheads, mechanical systems, and support columns all needed to be carefully integrated into the final design and layout.

Another major component of the renovation involved adding a new egress window to create a safe and code-compliant multi-purpose room. This required removing the existing basement window, cutting and lowering the concrete foundation opening, and installing a new window well and drainage system. The project also required careful planning to maximize storage opportunities through custom cabinetry and under-stair built-ins without making the basement feel overcrowded.
